27 Day Tajikistan Expedition
Fann Mountains + Pamir Highway
BOOK NOWOverview
This expedition takes in the best of Tajikistan in 27 days combining the mind-blowing Fann Mountains and the world's most epic road trip along the Pamir Highway. Starting from the capital city of Dushanbe, we will make our way north to begin our trek through the idyllic Fann Mountains, starting from the gorgeous lake of Iskanderkul to begin our trek into the Tajik wilderness. From Iskanderkul, we will continue on to cross over four mountain passes and numerous villages getting a taste of Tajik mountain culture, and visit several unbelievably beautiful lakes in the Fanns including Kulikalon, Chukurak, Bolshoi Allo, and finally ending at the stunning Alovaddin Lakes. After completing the trek, we will head back to Dushanbe for a well-deserved rest before we begin a wild adventure along Tajikistan’s famous Pamir Highway. The Pamir Highway portion of the Tajikistan expedition will bring us to some truly off-the-beaten-path corners of the Pamir including a lovely trek to the village of Jizeu in the Bartang Valley, a side trip along the Wakhan Valley, and visits to far-flung Zorkul Lake and Great Game hold out Shaimak. We will finally cross the border into Kyrgyzstan at Kyzyl Art and spend some time exploring the beautiful Tulparkul Lake before continuing onto the Kyrgyz Fergana Valley city of Osh.

FAQs
Are Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Safe to Visit?
Both Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are generally safe countries to visit and both have relatively low crime rates. The main concerns while traveling in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are the risk of injury during outdoor activities and altitude sickness.
Where are the Start & End Points on this Expedition?
This 25 Day Tajikistan Expedition will begin in Dushanbe, Tajikistan in the early morning of June 25th, and end in Osh, Kyrgyzstan on the evening of July 6th.
What Is The Difficulty Level Of This Tajikistan Expedition?
This Tajikistan expedition is rated as moderate to difficult and rugged. During the Fann Mountains portion and the treks to Jizeu and Pik Engles Meadows, we will be tent camping, sleeping in primitive camps, and will be trekking higher altitudes. We will have several nights without access to showers, so can be a bit uncomfortable for some.
You can expect long days of trekking on the Fann Mountains portion of the trip, up to 18 kilometers | 11 miles (7-10 hours) at the longest. As mentioned in the itinerary, we will trek over high mountain passes, the highest just over 3800 meters. We will have pack animal support for the trek to carry food and tents, but you should still expect to carry a pack with roughly 5-10 kg of weight each day.
The Pamir Highway portion of the expedition is rugged but isn't as physically challenging. The Peak Engles Meadows and Jizeu treks in the Pamirs are not as physically demanding and shorter in distance.
What are the Entry Requirements for Tajikistan & Kyrgyzstan?
Some nationalities need a Tajik visa issued by an embassy or consulate to enter the country, while others may only need an e-visa, visa on arrival, or may enter visa-free. If you are eligible for an e-visa, we recommend getting it to ease the process of obtaining a GBAO permit (read more about GBAO in the next section of the FAQ).
You can read an overview of Tajikistan's visa policy here but it would still be wise to check with your nearest Tajik consulate or embassy as visa schemes are always subject to change.
Note that if you will be entering Tajikistan visa-free and you will be staying in the country for more than 10 business days, you must register with OVIR. We will handle this process for you after you've checked into the hotel on the first day.
In Kyrgyzstan, most nationalities are eligible to enter the country visa-free for up to 60 days.
What is a GBAO Permit?
To enter the Pamir region of Tajikistan, foreign travelers are required to obtain a GBAO (Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast) permit. Those who are eligible for a Tajik e-visa can obtain a GBAO permit for an additional $20 USD when applying for the Tajik e-visa. The GBAO permit will be issued on the same document as the e-visa. Those who plan to enter Tajikistan visa-free or with a visa on arrival will need to visit the OVIR office in Dushanbe in person with their passport and pay a fee to obtain the GBAO permit. This process can take up to two days.
Do I Need Travel Insurance to Join this Tajikistan Expedition?
To join any Safar Expeditions departure you will need to carry an active travel insurance plan. Be aware that Tajikistan's generally remote nature poses very real challenges in the event of medical emergencies and serious illness. Because of this, it is recommended to select an insurance plan that covers both medical care and evacuation.
We recommend using IATI travel insurance for medical coverage and an evacuation plan from Global Rescue.
Prescriptions and over-the-counter meds are usually possible to find in Dushanbe, but we still recommend to make sure to bring any meds you need or may need with you.
What Currency Is Used In Tajikistan& Kyrgyzstan & How Can I Pay For Things?
The Tajik Somoni (TJS) is the official currency of Tajikistan. The value of the Somoni fluctuates a little but seems to have steadily stayed around 10-12 TJS to $1 USD for the past couple of years.
In Kyrgyzstan (KGS), the Kyrgyz Som is the official currency and has been steadily staying around 80-90 KGS to $1 USD.
Is There A Tajikistan Packing List & Prep Guide?
Yes, we do provide a suggested packing list and preparation guide for our Tajikistan expedition that can be viewed here.
What Is The Food Like & Can You Accommodate Dietary Restrictions?
The food you'll encounter during your time in Tajikistan will be simple and traditional. In the cities and towns, we will have the chance to try different Tajik and Central Asian dishes in local restaurants. Once the trek in the Fann Mountains begins we will have a cook with us who serves up some delicious meals as we make our way through the mountains. You can expect flavorful soups and salads, plov (a traditional Central Asian take on fried rice), noodle dishes, and meat dishes. Of course, almost any meal in Tajikistan is accompanied by a hot glass of chai. On the Pamir Highway portion of the trip, we'll mostly be eating homecooked meals provided by the homestays we'll staying in.
Please let us know of any dietary restrictions or allergies in advance so that we can accommodate your needs.
Will I Have Internet Access & Electricity?
SIM cards are available for purchase in Dushanbe, with T-Cell and Megafon having the best service. That said, we will not have access to the internet for most of the trek in the Fann Mountains.
Once we depart for the Pamirs portion of the expedition we will have internet in most of the larger villages and towns along the way.
On the Fann Mountains portion of the expedition, we will only have electricity on the nights we are in Dushanbe, Sarytag, Vin, and Artuch. In the Pamir, we will have access to electricity each evening.
Is There a Minimum Number of Participants Necessary for the Expedition to Run?
Yes, a minimum of 4 passengers will need to be on this expedition in order to run. If the minimum isn't reached, we will contact you about the potential to still operate the trip but at an additional charge or you will be given the option to cancel and your deposit/payment can either be returned to you or applied toward a different expedition of your choosing.
